Gypsies have had a large cultural impact on Spain, especially on spanish music. The Gypsy rumba first began to gain popularity in Spain in the mid-19th century, specifically in the Catalonia area of the country. While the earliest origins of rumba can be traced back to Cuba, but the gypsy version has its own unique style. After it was brought back from Cuba to Spain,  it was modified to be played with guitars and hand clapping, some body slaps, castanets, and cajon (box drums). This latin-style pattern makes the songs more adaptable to pop music.
